Teacher recruitment scam: High Court asks CBI to investigate

Kolkata | [Court Bulletin] | The Calcutta High Court has asked the Central Investigation Agency (CBI) to probe the allegations in the West Bengal primary teachers job scam case. The court on Wednesday directed a probe by Upen Biswas, former additional director of the central agency, against a resident of Bengal’s North 24 Parganas on charges of getting jobs by taking money.

Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay said there was a need for a CBI probe into the allegations and the agency would have to register a case and start its investigation immediately. Biswas, a former minister in the Mamata Banerjee government, had alleged on social media that Ranjan, a resident of Baghda in North 24 Parganas district, was involved in getting jobs of primary school teachers by taking money.

 What has the petitioner said

The petitioner in the matter has moved the High Court claiming that he was not informed about the appointments under the TET 2014 panel by the West Bengal Board of Elementary Education despite filing a Right to Information (RTI) application. He also said that Ranjan’s real name was Chandan Mandal.

Can be taken into custody for not cooperating

The court said that upon initiation of the investigation, the CBI will have the right to take the accused into custody for questioning if it does not co-operate with the agency. Justice Gangopadhyay also said that Biswas is also expected to cooperate fully in the CBI investigation.

The petitioner produced before the court two lists of alleged illegal appointments, one containing 68 names and the other with 18 names. The court directed the CBI to file a status report on its investigation on June 15, the next date of hearing.
