जंगे–आजादी में ईसाइयों का रोल ! इतने अहमक हैं भाजपा सांसद ? jange–aajaadee mein eesaiyon ka rol ! itane ahamak hain bhaajapa saansad ?

मुंबई (उत्तर) से भाजपाई सांसद (लोक सभा) गोपाल चिन्नय्या शेट्टी ने आजादी के अमृत महोत्सव पर कह दिया कि “जंगे–आजादी मे ईसाइयो ने भाग नहीं लिया। वे अंग्रेज थे।” सियासी वर्तुलों मे झंझावात उठा। तेज भी होना चाहिए था। मगर महाराष्ट्र भाजपा के प्रवक्ता माधव भंडारी ने इस उक्ति को नकार दिया। स्वयं शेट्टी ने कहा: “मेरे वाक्य को विकृत कर पेश किया गया है।”
फिलहाल क्षति तो हुई है। मगर सार्थक विवेचना की थी योग्य टीवी संवाददाता (न्यूज़ 18) की राका जी ने । तथ्यों के आधार पर किया था। अतः जरूरत है मजबूत समीक्षा की ऐसे अभद्र, असत्य, ओछे, पाखंडी, गैरजिम्मेदाराना राय की जो राष्ट्रविरोधी है। किन्तु 65-वर्षीय गोपाल शेट्टी ने बजाय पश्चाताप के बच निकलने की कोशिश की। हीला हवाला करते रहे।
वे पेशे से एक मेकेनिक है जो मरम्मत का काम करते है। अत: आदतन बात को मरोड़ा। बजाय बिगड़ी को सँवारने के। लोक सभा चुनाव मे इन्होंने अभिनेत्री उर्मिला मातोंडकर (कांग्रेस) को हराया था।
अतः अब दस्तावेजी तथा ऐतिहासिक रिश्तों के साथ सच्चाई आनी चाहिये। माना की इन भारतीय ईसाइयों तथा ब्रिटिश शासकों का मजहब एक ही था। मगर राष्ट्र ? वह तो हम सबका है।
भारतीय स्वाधीनता संघर्ष में प्रमुख आंदोलनकारी रहीं राजकुमारी बीबीजी अमृत कौर। वे ईसाई थी कपूरथला रियासत की थी। वे लखनऊ विश्वविद्यालय परिसर (बादशाहबाग) में जन्मी (2 फरवरी 1887) थीं। उनके पिता राजा हरनाम सिंह अहलूवालिया ने ईसाई धर्म अपना लिया था। अमृत जी के अग्रज राजा श्री महाराज सिंह थे।
वे बंबई प्रदेश के प्रथम भारतीय राज्यपाल रहे, कश्मीर रियासत के प्रधान मंत्री थे और जोधपुर के दीवान थे। लखनऊ विश्वविद्यालय के कुलाधिपति भी थे, क्रिकेटर भी। राजकुमारी अमृत कौर नियमित चर्च जाती थी। नेहरू काबीना मे प्रथम स्वास्थ्य मंत्री (16 अगस्त 1947 से 1957 तक) रहीं। वे महात्मा गांधी की 16 वर्षो तक निजी सचिव रहीं। संविधान सभा की सदस्या भी थीं।
वे परदा और बाल विवाह की सख्त विरोधी थी। दांडी नमक सत्याग्रह (1930) मे बापू के साथ जेल मे रहीं। “फिर भारत छोड़ो’’ (1942) मे कैद हुई।
इस भाजपाई सांसद ने डा. एनी बीसेंट का नाम जरूर सुना होगा। यह ब्रिटिश सोशलिस्ट और काशी हिन्दू विश्वविद्यालय की संस्थापिकाओं मे एक रहीं। डॉ बीसेंट भारतीय राष्ट्रीय काँग्रेस की अध्यक्ष (1917) थी। वैदिक दार्शनिक जिड्डु कृष्णमूर्ति उनके दत्तक पुत्र थे।
इसी भांति ईसाई पादरी चार्ल्स एंड्रयूस ने बापू को दक्षिण अफ्रीका से (1915) मे भारत बुलवाया था ताकि स्वाधीनता संघर्ष तेज हो सके। कैम्ब्रिज में शिक्षित यह स्वाधीनता सेनानी दिल्ली के संत स्टीफंस कॉलेज से जुड़े रहे। रवीन्द्रनाथ टैगोर के सहयोगी थे।
ईसाई स्वाधीनता सेनानियों में खास उदाहरण अल्वा दंपति का है। मारगेट अल्वा के वे सास और ससुर थे। पत्रकार और कोंग्रेसी सांसद जोकिम अल्वा ईसाई दल के संस्थापक थे। उडिपि (मेंगलोर, कर्नाटक) के जोकिम अल्वा मुंबई के शैरीफ भी थे। गुजराती ईसाई वायलट अल्वा से शादी की। वायलट अल्वा राज्यसभा की उप सभापति थीं।
केरल के वकील जार्ज जोसेफ मोतीलाल नेहरू के दैनिक “दि इंडिपेंडेंट” और गांधीजी की पत्रिका “यंग इंडिया” के संपादक थे। केरल के वाइकोम सत्याग्रह में जेल गए थे। उनके सहयोगीयों में के. कामराज, सी. राज गोपालाचार्य आदि थे।
मशहूर गांधीवादी अर्थशास्त्री जोसेफ कुमारप्पा तमिलनाडू के थे। मद्रास क्रिश्चन कॉलेज मे पढ़े थे। स्वाधीनता संग्राम के दौरान ग्राम उधोग तथा खादी विकास के कार्यक्रम से जुड़े थे। भारत छोड़ो आंदोलन मे जोसेफ कुमारप्पा साल भर जेल मे रहे।
बंगाल के दो ईसाई तो सत्याग्रही ब्राह्मण कुटुंब के थे और राष्ट्रीय काँग्रेस मे सक्रिय थे। नाम था कालीचरण बंधोपध्याय और ब्रम्हबांघव उपाध्याय जो स्वामी विवेकानंद के सहपाठी थे। कुलीनविप्र कालीचरण को ब्रिटिश हुकूमत ने राजद्रोह मे कैद कर लिया था। उनका निधन जेल मे ही हो गया था।
अक्कमा (दीदी) चेरियन त्रावंकोर मे स्कूल अध्यापिका थी। प्रिंसिपल रहीं फिर नौकरी छोडकर सत्याग्रही बनी। जेल की सजा भुगती। प्रमुख ईसाई कृषि वैज्ञानिक केरलवासी टाईटस थेवरयूंगडिल बापू के निकटतम सहयोगी रहे। साबरमती आश्रम की गौशाला के प्रबन्धक रहे। बापू उनके केरला वाले घर जा चुके है।
टाईटस की पुस्तक “मेरे सपनों का भारत” आज़ाद हिन्द की रूपरेखा पर लिखी मशहूर रचना थी। प्रातः सत्संग, भजन और चरखा कातने मे उनका जीवन बीतता था। उनके पास केवल दो जोड़ी कपड़े थे।
उनकी पत्नी अन्नम्मा टाईटस ने अपने सारे गहने साबरमती आश्रम को दे दिया था। वे दोनों दांडी कूच और धरसाना नमक गोदाम पर धावा बोलने के लिए याद किए जाते हैं।
सबसे ज्यादा मशहूर विदेशी ईसाइयों जो भारतीय स्वाधीनता आंदोलन के लिए याद किए जाते है, वे हैं गांधी फिल्म के निदेशक रिचर्ड ऐटनबरो और बापू की भूमिका मे रहे बेन किंग्सले।
यदि ये भाजपाई सांसद गांधी संग्रालय में जाकर पुस्तकें पढ़ लेता तो उसे पर्याप्त जानकारी हो जाती कि आजादी की जंग में ईसाइयों का क्या योगदान रहा। अतः भाजपा के राष्ट्रीय अध्यक्ष जगत प्रकाश नड्डा को विशेष पाठयक्रम चलाना चाहिये ताकि भारत के इतिहास को ये लोग जान सकें। गोपाल शेट्टी को क्या पता कि 31 जनवरी 1954 के पहले हिंदुस्तान मे क्या हुआ था ? यह उनकी जन्मतिथि थी।
The role of Christians in war-freedom! Are BJP MPs so important?

BJP MP (Lok Sabha) from Mumbai (North) Gopal Chinnaya Shetty said on the Amrit Mahotsav of Independence that “Christians did not participate in the war of independence. They were British.” There was an uproar in the political circles. Should have been faster. But Maharashtra BJP spokesperson Madhav Bhandari denied this statement. Shetty himself said: “My sentence has been distorted.”
For now, the damage is done. But the meaningful discussion was done by Raka ji of qualified TV correspondent (News 18). Based on facts. Therefore, there is a need for strong review of such indecent, untrue, petty, hypocritical, irresponsible opinion which is anti-national. But 65-year-old Gopal Shetty instead tried to escape without remorse. Heela kept referring.
He is a mechanic by profession who does repair work. So habitually twist the matter. Instead of fixing the bad. He defeated actress Urmila Matondkar (Congress) in the Lok Sabha elections.
So now truth must come with documentary and historical relationships. Believe that the religion of these Indian Christians and British rulers was the same. But the nation? He belongs to all of us.
Princess BBG Amrit Kaur was a major agitator in the Indian independence struggle. She was a Christian, belonged to the princely state of Kapurthala. She was born (2 February 1887) in Lucknow University campus (Badshahbagh). His father Raja Harnam Singh Ahluwalia had converted to Christianity. Amrit ji’s forefather was Raja Shri Maharaj Singh.
He was the first Indian Governor of Bombay State, Prime Minister of the princely state of Kashmir and Diwan of Jodhpur. He was also the Chancellor of Lucknow University, also a cricketer. Rajkumari Amrit Kaur used to go to church regularly. Nehru was the first health minister in the cabinet (from 16 August 1947 to 1957). She was the personal secretary of Mahatma Gandhi for 16 years. She was also a member of the Constituent Assembly.
She was a strong opponent of purdah and child marriage. She was in jail with Bapu in Dandi Salt Satyagraha (1930). Imprisoned in “Then Quit India” (1942).
This BJP MP must have heard the name of Dr. Annie Besant. She was a British socialist and one of the founders of Banaras Hindu University. Dr Besant was the President of the Indian National Congress (1917). The Vedic philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti was his adopted son.
Similarly, Christian priest Charles Andrews had called Bapu from South Africa to India in (1915) so that the freedom struggle could intensify. Educated in Cambridge, this freedom fighter was associated with St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. He was an associate of Rabindranath Tagore.
A notable example among Christian freedom fighters is that of the Alva couple. They were the mother-in-law and father-in-law of Margaret Alva. Journalist and Congress MP Joaquim Alva was the founder of the Christian Party. Joachim Alva of Udipi (Mangalore, Karnataka) was also the Sheriff of Mumbai. Married to Gujarati Christian Violat Alva. Violet Alva was the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
Kerala lawyer George Joseph was the editor of Motilal Nehru’s daily “The Independent” and Gandhi’s magazine “Young India”. He was jailed in Kerala’s Vaikom Satyagraha. Among his colleagues K. Kamaraj, C. Raj Gopalacharya etc.
The famous Gandhian economist Joseph Kumarappa was from Tamil Nadu. Studied at Madras Christian College. During the freedom struggle, he was associated with the program of village industry and Khadi development. Joseph Kumarappa was imprisoned for a year during the Quit India Movement.
Two Christians of Bengal belonged to the Satyagrahi Brahmin family and were active in the National Congress. The names were Kalicharan Bandhopadhyay and Bramhabanghav Upadhyay who were classmates of Swami Vivekananda. Kulinvipra Kalicharan was imprisoned by the British government for treason. He died in jail itself.
Akkama (sister) Cherian was a school teacher in Travancore. She remained a principal, then left her job and became a satyagrahi. Served prison sentence. The prominent Christian agricultural scientist Titus Thevarayungdil, a Keralite, was Bapu’s closest associate. He was the manager of the Gaushala of Sabarmati Ashram. Bapu has gone to his Kerala home.
Titus’s book “India of my dreams” was a famous work written on the outline of Azad Hind. His life was spent in the morning satsang, bhajan and spinning the spinning wheel. He had only two pairs of clothes.
His wife Annamma Titus had given all her ornaments to the Sabarmati Ashram. They are both remembered for raiding the Dandi march and the Dharasana salt warehouse.
The most famous foreign Christians who are remembered for the Indian independence movement are Richard Attenborough, director of the film Gandhi, and Ben Kingsley as Bapu.
If this BJP MP had gone to the Gandhi Museum and read the books, he would have got enough information about the contribution of Christians in the freedom struggle. Therefore, BJP National President Jagat Prakash Nadda should run a special course so that these people can know the history of India. What did Gopal Shetty know about what happened in India before 31 January 1954? It was his date of birth.
