नई दिल्ली | [नेशनल बुलेटिन] | पूर्व भारतीय क्रिकेटर और कांग्रेस के फायर ब्रांड नेता नवजोत सिंह सिद्धू को देश की सर्वोच्च अदालत सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने एक साल जेल की सजा सुनाई है। सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने गुरुवार को 1988 रोडरेज मामले में फायर ब्रांड नेता नवजोत सिंह सिद्धू को एक साल की कैद की सजा सुनाई है। रोडरेज मामले में नवजोत सिंह सिद्धू की सजा बढ़ाने की याचिका पर सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने फैसला सुनाया है। इस सजा के ऐलान के साथ ही सिद्धू के समर्थकों में मायूसी छाई हुई है, वहीं कुछ लोग अभी इस बात से वाकिफ नहीं हैं कि यह कब का और कौन सा मामला था, जिस पर सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने अपना फैसला सुनाया है।
दिसंबर 1988 की वह घटना थी
दरअसल, यह मामला तब हुआ था जब सिद्धू एक क्रिकेटर थे। उनका अंतरराष्ट्रीय करियर शुरू हुए एक साल ही हुआ था। 25 साल के नवजोत सिंह सिद्धू ने पटियाला में 27 दिसंबर 1988 की दोपहर गुरनाम सिंह को मामूली विवाद में सिर पर मुक्का मार दिया था। यह विवाद तब हुआ था जब उस दिन शाम को सिद्धू अपने दोस्त रूपिंदर सिंह संधू के साथ पटियाला के शेरावाले गेट की मार्केट में पहुंचे। यह जगह उनके घर से करीब एक किलोमीटर दूर थी। इस मार्केट में कार पार्किंग को लेकर उनकी 65 साल के बुजुर्ग गुरनाम सिंह से कहासुनी हो गई थी।
गुस्से में सिद्धू ने गुरनाम सिंह को मारकर गिरा दिया
इसके बाद यह कहासुनी इतनी आगे बढ़ है कि बात हाथापाई तक जा पहुंची। सिद्धू ने गुरनाम सिंह को मुक्का मारकर गिरा दिया। उसके बाद गुरनाम सिंह को अस्पताल ले जाया गया, जहां उनकी मौत हो गई। रिपोर्ट में आया कि गुरनाम सिंह की मौत दिल का दौरा पड़ने से हुई थी। उसी दिन सिद्धू और उनके दोस्त रूपिंदर पर कोतवाली थाने में गैर इरादतन हत्या का केस दर्ज हुआ। सेशन कोर्ट में केस चला, इसके बाद 1999 में सेशन कोर्ट ने केस को खारिज कर दिया।
पीड़ित की तरफ से दाखिल हुई थी पिटीशन
सितंबर 1999 में निचली अदालत ने नवजोत सिह सिद्धू को बरी कर दिया था, लेकिन हाई कोर्ट ने दिसंबर 2006 में सिद्धू और एक अन्य पर गैर इरादतन हत्या मामले में दोषी करार देते हुए 3-3 साल कैद की सजा सुनाई थी, जिसे दोनों ने सुप्रीम कोर्ट में चुनौती दी थी। जिसके बाद सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने सिद्धू को पीड़ित के साथ मारपीट मामले में दोषी करार देते हुए हजार रुपये का जुर्माना लगाया था। बाद में इसी मामले में पीड़ित की ओर से सुप्रीम कोर्ट में रिव्यू पिटीशन दाखिल की गई थी।
पहले इस मामले में हाईकोर्ट ने सुनाई थी सजा
उधर इसी बीच साल 2002 में पंजाब सरकार ने सिद्धू के खिलाफ हाईकोर्ट में अपील की थी और इसी बीच सिद्धू राजनीति में आ गए। 2004 के लोकसभा चुनाव में अमृतसर सीट से बीजेपी की टिकट पर चुनाव लड़ा और जीते। दिसंबर 2006 को हाईकोर्ट का फैसला आया। हाईकोर्ट ने सिद्धू और संधू को दोषी ठहराते हुए 3-3 साल कैद की सजा सुनाई। सिद्धू ने लोकसभा से इस्तीफा दे दिया और हाईकोर्ट के फैसले को सुप्रीम कोर्ट में चुनौती दी गई। सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने हाईकोर्ट के फैसले पर रोक लगाई थी।
सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने फैसला सुरक्षित रखा था
इसके बाद मृतक गुरनाम सिंह के परिजनों ने 2010 में एक चैनल के शो में सिद्धू द्वारा गुरनाम को मारने की बात स्वीकार करने की सीडी सुप्रीम कोर्ट में दाखिल की थी। 2018 में सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने सिद्धू को section 323 के तहत दोषी पाया था। लेकिन गैर इरादतन हत्या (304) के तहत दोषी नहीं पाया था। इसमें सिद्धू को जुर्माना लगाकर छोड़ दिया गया था। और फिर अंत में सुप्रीम कोर्ट रिव्यू पिटिशन पर सुनवाई के लिए तैयार हुआ और मार्च 2022 में रिव्यू पिटिशन पर अपना फैसला कोर्ट ने सुरक्षित रख लिया था। इसके बाद अंत में फैसला सुना दिया गया।

Actually, this matter happened when Sidhu was a cricketer. It was only a year after his international career began. Navjot Singh Sidhu, 25, had punched Gurnam Singh on the head in Patiala on the afternoon of 27 December 1988 in a minor dispute. The dispute took place when Sidhu along with his friend Rupinder Singh Sandhu reached the market at Sherawale Gate in Patiala in the evening of that day. This place was about a kilometer away from his house. He had an altercation with 65-year-old Gurnam Singh over car parking in this market.
In anger, Sidhu killed Gurnam Singh and dropped him.
After this, the tussle has progressed so much that the matter reached to a scuffle. Sidhu punched Gurnam Singh and dropped him. Gurnam Singh was then taken to the hospital, where he died. Reports came that Gurnam Singh had died of a heart attack. On the same day, a case of culpable homicide was registered against Sidhu and his friend Rupinder at Kotwali police station. The case went on in the Sessions Court, after which in 1999 the Sessions Court dismissed the case.
Petition was filed on behalf of the victim
Navjot Singh Sidhu was acquitted by the trial court in September 1999, but the High Court in December 2006 convicted Sidhu and another in the culpable homicide not amounting to murder case and sentenced him to three years’ imprisonment, both of which were held by the Supreme Court. was challenged in court. After which the Supreme Court had convicted Sidhu in the assault case and imposed a fine of Rs. Later in the same case, a review petition was filed on behalf of the victim in the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, in the year 2002, the Punjab government had appealed against Sidhu in the High Court and in the meantime Sidhu entered politics. Contested and won on BJP ticket from Amritsar seat in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections. The High Court’s decision came in December 2006. The High Court convicted Sidhu and Sandhu and sentenced them to three years’ imprisonment. Sidhu resigned from the Lok Sabha and the High Court’s decision was challenged in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court had stayed the High Court’s decision.
Supreme Court had reserved the verdict
After this, the relatives of the deceased Gurnam Singh had filed a CD in the Supreme Court in 2010 admitting that Sidhu had killed Gurnam in a channel show. In 2018, the Supreme Court found Sidhu guilty under section 323. But was found not guilty under culpable homicide not amounting to murder (304). In this, Sidhu was released after paying a fine. And then finally the Supreme Court agreed to hear the review petition and in March 2022, the court had reserved its decision on the review petition. After this the verdict was finally delivered.
