The rebel Ballia Sirmaur was the war of freedom!!

Ballia district was synonymous with rebellion. Yesterday (August 19, 2022) when he was celebrating the 80th celebration of his 3-day independence, the nectar of independence got lit up. The main character of the ceremony, Yogi Adityanath, who was born three decades after the event, was speechless. The liberated Ballia Chittu Pandeywala got engraved on everyone’s psyche. The British Parliament was stunned when it was told that Ballia had become independent. Then after 3 days in London itself it was announced that “Ballia has been conquered again and made a part of the empire”.

The brute destruction of British power in Purvanchal was a frenzy. Its realistic reporting was done by Prayagraj journalist and then nationalist daily “The National Herald” correspondent PD Tandon. After refusing him, editor K. Rama Rao published the main news (in the banner heading). His words were “The massacre of Ballia.” That’s when Rama Rao was released from Lucknow jail. The closed newspaper was open again. (photo is given).

On this news, for the fourth time, the British Governor of the United Provinces, Sir Maris Hallett, imposed a fine of 50 thousand rupees on Harald. But the editor burst out laughing. By then Govind Vallabh Pant was being nominated as the first Chief Minister. So would the independent government have collected the fine from the nationalist daily?

But Jawaharlal Nehru, president of the Associated Journal, expressed displeasure over the headline and reportage given by the editor. The nominated prime minister believed that the British Raj should be lenient as he was leaving India and going back home. But the editor insisted that these white butchers of Ballia could not be forgiven.

Eventually the editor resigned. He went south to become the editor of the new daily of Madras (today Chennai). The newspaper description of the atrocious work done by the British rulers in Ballia is given below. Every Indian will get goosebumps after reading this. There will be hatred. Anger too. The description of the events of August 1942 was printed as follows:

“Train was looted on Bilthara road in Ballia, engine was broken. Post offices, seed godowns and police stations were attacked. A bullet was fired at the seed warehouse. Kaushal Kumar was shot while raising the flag at the police station. People were locked up in police stations and shots were fired at them. Chittu Pandey assumed the post of District Collector. The houses of the helpers of the revolution were burnt, people were made cock.

Butts and scrotums were hit with sticks. The bayonet was pierced from below by climbing the trees. An airplane was swung from above to scare. Shots were fired to hoist the tricolor on the monastery. Mahant jumped from a height of 40 feet and broke his leg. Whereas he himself had given 10 thousand donations to the government. Chandi Prasad was shot because he was a member of Congress in 1921.

Shot fired in Bansdih. Ramkrishna Singh and Bageshwar were beaten so much that they died. The agricultural market was looted. Those who fled to the fields were also fired upon. The terror had become so formidable that the watchman had become like a captain.

Upadhyay wrote: “For some of the more dangerous prisoners there were more dangerous tortures. Applying chili on the genitals and sticking on the penis and rubbing it. After getting the permission of the police, the employee used to rub the male senses with his hands, at first semen would come out, but while rubbing, blood would come out. According to Devnath Upadhyay 64 people were martyred in Ballia. Firing was fired at Sadat and Zamania in Ghazipur and some persons were martyred.

In the context of the martyrdom ceremony of Ballia, an incident of us journalists related to Yogi Adityanath is also noteworthy. In September 2011 in Gorakhpur, the National Council session of our Indian Federation of Working Journalists (IFWJ) was inaugurated by MP Yogi. Our fellow people were going to Nepal from there. Yogi had added a special place to our program. That was Chaurachauri where the Satyagrahis (February 1921) turned violent.

As a result, Mahatma Gandhi withdrew his first non-cooperation satyagraha. Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over the centenary celebrations here last year. Yogiji had done the Samyak Yatra of our IFWJ representatives to this martyr’s place.

This memorial was built by Indira Gandhi in February 1982 and then Chief Minister Vishwanath Pratap Singh had taken me there. I was the head of the UP Bureau of “Times of India”. The newspaper was then printed from Delhi and sent to Lucknow.

Today, India is expressing its due gratitude to its martyrs in the year of Amritotsav. All the patriots rejoiced.
