Dara Shikoh Adhuna is a Lamp Pillar – Part One

Just imagine, 363 years ago, if liberal Islam had defeated Mahjabi extremism, the inclusive Dara Shikoh would have succeeded Shah Jahan as the Mughal emperor? The old history of today’s geography would have been different. The eternal faith and curiosity of the generous Mughal Wali Ahad Muhammad Dara Shikoh would form the foundation of a pluralistic India. But destiny turned out to be very cruel. It was so promising.

Dara Shikoh is greatly missed in today’s Islamic tension environment. In that medieval period, this Mughal crown prince was virtually secular. He was a follower of all religions. But it is sad that in independent India, the days of the road and lane (28 August 2015) named after the bloodthirsty Aurangzeb were changed after a delay of 65 years. But for the first time in New Delhi (February 2017) a road was named after Dara Shikoh. That British Governor General was Lord James Dalhousie Road.  It was in the name of the person who made a law to usurp the rule of the rulers of the Indian princely states that whatever native king or queen dies childless, their princely state will be merged into the empire. As a result the kingdom of Jhansi was taken.

Here is an excerpt from author Neha Dabhade’s article on this Mughal crown prince, published on February 27, 2017. He said that Dara Shikoh is often compared to his great-grandfather, Akbar. Akbar also made a comparative study of other religions but there were important differences between the two. Akbar’s policy of tolerance and his exchange of views with scholars of different religions was aimed at political. They wanted to strengthen their empire in India, where the majority of the population was Hindu. But Dara Shikoh had no attachment to power and worldly things. He studied different religions in search of truth. He sincerely believed that no religion had a monopoly on truth. Truth has many aspects and dimensions and truth is present in every religion.

His spiritual journey started with coming in contact with great Sufi saints. He was very close to Mian and Mullah Shah Badakshi. He studied Sufism and became a member of the Qadiri Sufi Silsila. He was bitterly opposed to the Mullahs as the Mullahs often misinterpreted Islam and promoted bigotry and intolerance. His in-depth study of Sufism led Dara Shikoh to realize that we need neither mullahs nor rituals to be one with God. What is needed is only love for God and selfless surrender before Him.

Why should the US President Barack Obama be mentioned here, who did not go to Agra and went to Dara’s tomb? The Obama couple also made it clear that they are not tourists, although it has become an amusing tradition for every state guest to visit the mausoleum of Malika Mumtaz Mahal. Going off that line, Barack Obama has given new indications to the society of the fractured subcontinent by seeing the mausoleum of his great-grandfather instead of Shah Jahan’s building. Obama could go to the ramparts of the Red Fort.

One could see the tall, old peak of Qutub Minar. So why Humayun’s tomb? Obama has given indirect messages by including this tomb, which was dilapidated for the last two decades and has been decorated since becoming a World Heritage (1993), in his itinerary. Dara Shikoh is buried here.
