No evidence to build a mosque by demolishing a temple, ASI’s argument in court

New Delhi | [Court Bulletin] | Hearing was held in Delhi’s Saket court regarding the claim of building a mosque by demolishing the temple in the Qutub Minar complex. The court has reserved the order in this case. The court will give its verdict in the case on 9 June 2022. The ASI (Archaeological Survey Department) told the court that there was no evidence to suggest that the mosque located in the Qutub Minar complex was built by demolishing a temple.

The ASI said that there is also no evidence that the iron pillar and the remains of the temple were already there or were brought from outside. The ASI clearly stated that Qutub Minar was never a place of worship. The ASI opposed the demand for restoration of the temple in the Qutub Minar complex. He said that since 1914, Qutub Minar is being protected as a historical building and its structure cannot be changed.

 What’s the matter?

The petition claimed that there were Hindu and Jain temples in the Qutub Minar complex which were demolished. The petitioner had also sought permission for worship in the premises. The controversy started when former ASI regional director Dharamvir Sharma claimed that the Qutub Minar was built by the Hindu king Vikramaditya and not Qutb al-Din Aibak.

He said that it was a sun tower. They also claimed that idols of Hindu gods and goddesses were found in the premises and that the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque was built by demolishing 27 Jain temples.
