Didneshwari’s statue was stolen in 1991

The idol of Didneshwari Devi (Didin Dai) made of black grenide stone from the Didneshwari temple of Malhar, a site of archaeological importance in the Masturi police station area of Bilaspur district of Chhattisgarh in greater Madhya Pradesh, was stolen 31 years ago, on 19 April 1991. The method of stealing the idol of Garuna from Ganesh temple and the idol of Didneshwari Devi from Malhar is the same. Both the statues are made of black grenide stone. The stealing time of both the idols is between one and two in the night.

Before the theft of the idol of Didneshwari Devi, the thieves had opened the temple on the pretext of seeing the goddess from the priest sleeping in the temple. The priest and his son-in-law were sleeping in the temple on the night of the incident. The number of thieves was about 6. He called the priest out on the pretext and had tied him tightly to his dhoti by force at some distance. The son-in-law of the priest located in the temple asked for the key with a pistol and took the idol and took it away in a white colored Maruti van.

The thieves locked the priest’s son-in-law inside the temple and threw the key somewhere else. Later, somehow the priest came running to the temple, untied his shackles and in a delirious condition, he informed the villagers about the incident of theft.

At that time the international market value of Didin Dai’s statue was estimated at Rs 14 crore. The idol thieves had come to Malhar from Mainpur area of Uttar Pradesh. He had made a deal of this idol with the smugglers of Nepal for fourteen and a half crore rupees. Before the idol of Didin Dai was sent abroad, the Bilaspur Police with the help of Uttar Pradesh Police recovered it from Mainpur on 21 May 1991, a month after the incident.

In fact, the police got a clue from the local toll barrier where the receipt along with the number of the vehicle was deducted. The police came to know from the investigation that it was the vehicle of the local travel agency. The local police smartly reached the said travel agency to hire a vehicle. From there, the police came to know from mutual conversation that some people had taken the vehicle on rent during a month. After collecting enough clues, the police reached Uttar Pradesh on its basis.

Eventually, with the joint efforts of the UP-MP Police, the sculptors were nabbed and Didin Dai’s statue was also safely recovered from them. Police could arrest only 2 accused while 3 other accused managed to escape. Idol thieves had told that the idol was taken from Bilaspur to Mainpur via Mandla, Jabalpur, Sagar, Lalitpur, Jhansi.

Surprisingly, the kingpin of the idols was never caught. In fact, according to the situation at that time, the priority of the police was to bring the idol back safely.

Archaeologist Rahul Singh told that the idol of Didin Dai was first brought to Bilaspur. In Bilaspur, its public demonstration was done by making a pandal in the Civil Line police station premises. At that time, there was an influx of devotees who visited and worshiped the idol throughout the day. Civil line police was doing double duty. Along with the protection of the idol, the arrangements there, the policemen were also discharging the duty of the priest. Later, by a court order, this statue was handed over to the former holder Lanuram Kaivart on a bail of one lakh rupees. The statue was taken to Malhar with a huge procession.

The journey took more than 8 hours to complete the 33 km journey. Later the idol of Didneshwari Devi was re-established in its original place on 7th June 1991 in auspicious time.
