वेटिकन सिटी | [ इंटरनेशनल बुलेटिन ] | देवसहायम पिल्लई को पोप फ्रांसिस ने संत घोषित किया है। उनका जन्म हिंदू परिवार में हुआ था लेकिन उन्होंने ईसाई धर्म स्वीकार कर लिया था। देवसहायम का जन्म 23 अप्रैल 1712 में एक हिंदू नायर परिवार में हुआ था। उनका मूल नाम नीलकंठ पिल्लई है।
वे कन्याकुमारी स्थित नट्टलम के रहने वाले थे जो तत्कालीन त्रवणकोर राज्य का हिस्सा था। वह त्रावणकोर के महाराजा मार्तंड वर्मा के दरबार में कर्मचारी थे। उन्हें डच नौसेना के कमांडर ने कैथोलिक ईसाई धर्म की दीक्षा दी थी। देवसहायम को उनके जन्म के 300 साल बाद कोट्टर में दो दिसंबर 2012 को सौभाग्यशाली घोषित किया गया।
वेटिकन में पोप फ्रांसिस ने यह ऐलान किया। पीटर्स बेसिलिका में संतों की सूची में 9 अन्य नाम भी शामिल किए गए हैं। यह उपलब्धि हासिल करने वाले वह पहले भारतीय हैं।
साल 2004 में ही कोट्टर सूब, तमिलनाडु बिशप्स काउंसिल और भारत के कैथोलिक बिशप्स संगठन ने वेटिकन से बीटिफिकेशन की प्रक्रिया में उनको शामिल करने की सिफारिश की थी। देवसहायम पिल्लई ने 1745 में ही ईसाई धर्म स्वीकार कर लिया था और अपना नाम ‘लाजरस’ रख लिया था। इसका भी अर्थ देवों की सहायता करने वाला होता है।
पिल्लई के चमत्कारिक परोपकारी कार्यों को पोप फ्रांसिस ने वर्ष 2014 में मान्यता दी गई थी। इससे वर्ष 2022 में उन्हें (पिल्लई को) संत घोषित किए जाने का रास्ता साफ हो गया था। प्रक्रिया पूरी होने के साथ ही पिल्लई पहले भारतीय आमजन हैं जो संत घोषित किए गए हैं।
Pope Francis declares Devasahyam Pillai a saint, becomes the first Indian
Vatican City | [ International Bulletin ] | Devasahyam Pillai has been declared a saint by Pope Francis. He was born in a Hindu family but converted to Christianity. Devasahyam was born on 23 April 1712 in a Hindu Nair family. His original name is Neelkanth Pillai. He was a resident of Nattalam in Kanyakumari which was part of the then Travancore state.
He was an employee in the court of Maharaja Marthanda Varma of Travancore. He was initiated into Catholicism by the commander of the Dutch Navy. Devasahyam was declared lucky on 2 December 2012 in Kottar, 300 years after his birth.
Pope Francis announced this at the Vatican. Nine other names are also included in the list of saints in Peter’s Basilica. He is the first Indian to achieve this feat.
In 2004, Kottar Diocese, Tamil Nadu Bishops’ Council and the Catholic Bishops’ Association of India recommended to the Vatican to include him in the process of Beatification. Devasahayam Pillai had converted to Christianity in 1745 and changed his name to ‘Lazarus’. It also means the one who helps the gods.
Pillai’s miraculous philanthropic work was recognized by Pope Francis in the year 2014. This paved the way for him (Pillai) to be declared a saint in the year 2022. With the completion of the process, Pillai is the first Indian common man to be declared a saint.
