Marriage certificate issued from church is not valid for Aadhar card, High Court seeks response from Center

Mumbai | [Court Bulletin] | The marriage certificate of the church is not valid for Aadhaar. This came to the fore when a petition was filed in the Bombay High Court in a case related to Aadhaar. Now the Bombay High Court has sought a response from the Center on this petition. Justices Revathi-Mohite Dere and Madhav Jamdar last week heard a petition by Roman Catholic Christian Maurissa Almeida (27). The woman married Swapnil on December 26, 2021 at Our Lady of Mercy Church, Vasai after which a marriage certificate was issued by the Parish Priest on January 19 this year. The certificate was attested by the Chancellor, Vasai Diocese, and then notarized.

In the petition, Christian women have referred to the “challenges” faced by them while getting their names changed in the Aadhaar card. Women say that they are facing difficulties in getting their name changed in their Aadhaar card as church marriage certificate is not a valid document for Aadhaar.

According to the Times of India report, on January 31, the Christian Marriage Registrar at Mantralaya approved and stamped the certificate and so did the Home Department. His petition states that on February 14, the Vasai Aadhaar Center refused to accept his form, saying the church marriage certificate is “not proper” and is not accepted for Aadhaar cards.

The staff said the woman had options to marry under the Special Marriage Act or before the Christian Marriage Registrar at Mantralaya or change her name in the Official Gazette. Almeida inquired from churches, friends and family in Vasai and Mumbai area and came to know that she is not alone but for other Christian women, changing her name after marriage in Aadhar Card, Pan Card, Bank Account, Passport etc. is a daunting task. has been made.
